Would you use a GPS collar on your outdoor cat? While our cats are indoors-only, we do use a GPS collar on our dogs. They’re always on-leash when we’re out but it does provide peace of mind in case they should get away from us.
The GPS collars we’ve used have all been too large for all but the very largest cats, though. There is a crowdfunding project underway right now from developers in Switzerland for a new micro-GPS collar specially designed for cats.
The new petTracer Ag is working to bring the world’s first and only ultra-light GPS cat collar to market. This particular campaign ends on January 6, 2015, and it has been fully funded.
“We have been steadfast in our vision to bring this much needed product to the world. People who have pets regard them as one of the family and it is very distressing to have your beloved cat go missing,” says Alan Ellenberger, co-founder of petTracer Ag with Claudio Gloor. “That is why we have not wavered from this project and have done whatever is necessary to make it a reality.”
Ellenberger and Gloor worked to create a device that didn’t need daily charging and yet could power the GPS in the collar, while keeping the collar light enough so the cat would wear it. Here are the specs on the new petTrace GPS cat collar:
— is ultra-light, weighing just over 20 grams
— comes with a battery life of up to 4 weeks
— does not expose cats to harmful mobile phone radiation
— constantly tracks the whereabouts of the cat, making it possible to find her everywhere in real time
— comes with a one-click-safety release which opens instantly, should your cat get caught somewhere
— is water resistant and durable
— allows the cat owners to analyze the fitness level of their cats and compare them to others from around the world
