A love letter to our purring pals from the past, an exhibition of an Edwardian illustrator’s cat-themed postcards is something to write home about!
An artist who rendered kitties in both the clothing and characteristics of early 20th century humans, the work of Violet Roberts is featured in Fabulous Felines, currently on display at the Streetlife Museum of Transport in Kingston upon Hull, the English city which Roberts called home for most of her days. The one-time musical theater entertainer’s endearing ‘purr’traits are now prized by collectors.
Along with seeing the anthropomorphic adventures of tabbies traveling on an ocean liner or riding on horseback along a sandy beach, the exhibit also delivers a snapshot of styles from a bygone era, from the jaunty straw boaters and bowlers worn by male “moggies” (a British term for cats) to flower-festooned hats on female felines that conjure up images of the Gibson Girl to kitties kitted out in kilts and stylish winter coats.
Once museum visitors view the vintage visions of Violet Roberts, they are invited to go in search of the venue’s other kitty-inspired items displayed on the museum’s cat trail. Fabulous Felines will be at the Streetlife Museum on High Street in Hull through March 31st– plenty of time to send a postcard to all your feline-loving friends to say “Having a wonderful time! Wish you were here!”
