Over the years the Algonquin Hotel has been a meeting place for some of Manhattan’s coolest cats, from writers Dorothy Parker and William Faulkner to acting icons Douglas Fairbanks and John Barrymore…and since the 1930s, always one very famous feline, named either Hamlet or Matilda. History has recorded seven Hamlets whose paws have promenaded through the halls of the landmark hotel, and three with Matilda as her moniker.
Matilda III, who was found abandoned in a cardboard box, has lived at The Algonquin since late 2010, and the rescued Ragdoll is once again helping companion animals who need forever homes by throwing a purr-ty at the hotel she calls home.
On August 3, fans of felines will gather for a fete that seamlessly weaves together kitties and couture for a good cause: Matilda’s Annual Celebration & Cat Fashion Show. Ticket holders will sip cocktails and nom on appetizers while applauding an array of cats as they tap into their inner Cindy Clawford or Kat Moss. A raffle will also help to raise funds.
A happening with a lot of heart, 100 percent of the proceeds from the event will go to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, a non-profit founded in 2003 which helps a coalition of more than 150 area rescue groups and shelters in an effort to put an end to the euthanasia of health, adoptable companion animals in New York City.
While inside the hotel a clowder of style savvy Manhattan superMEOWdels will wow the crowd, a mobile adoption unit filled with felines looking for forever families to love will be parked outside The Algonquin, proving to the public that compassion is always in fashion.
