8 Thrift Store Purchases for Your Cat

Share with fellow cat lovers!

I love thrift stores. Most of our purchases–from clothing to household items–come from our local thrift stores.

And that also includes purchases we make for our cats. While soft cat-specific products such as cat condos or cat toys we purchase new, hard-sided products that can be thoroughly cleaned such as carriers are often found at shops. However, my favorite purchases are actually goods that I repurpose for the cats, human products that serve our feline needs just great. Here’s a look at my favorite nine items from thrift stores for our cats:

1. Fleece blankets

Fleece blankets are usually plentiful at the thrift store, often extra-soft baby blankets that are a great size. I’ve also purchased large blankets and cut them to size for cat beds and perch pillows.

2. Fabrics

a7

Need fabric for a cat bed? To create cat toys? To cover a couch? Fabric is a staple at the thrift stores sold in all different lengths.

3. Litter mats and rugs

a6

Need a small rug to prevent litter from being tracked out of the box? I’ve purchased all kinds of small rugs and even sisal rugs that have been repurposed as scratchers.

4. Plastic bins for litterboxes

Cats love clear litterboxes so they can see if anyone’s coming up on them…and they also like a litterbox that’s ideally one and a half times their body length. I’ve found many inexpensive clear storage bins, underbed boxes, etc. at the thrift store for a fraction of their store price.

5. Shelving

Looking for shelving to create an elevated walkway or perches for your cat? Small shelves are always found at the thrift store. With a touch of paint, you can match your decor and have a great space for your cat for just a few dollars.

6. Baskets a2

Baskets, baskets, baskets…the thrift store shelves are overflowing with baskets! I purchased a rectangular basket, filled it with a old bed pillow, and topped it with a plush throw. It’s Linus’s favorite bed!

7. Dishes and bowls

a1

From flat dishes that will prevent whisker stress to wide bowls for encouraging your cat to drink more water, thrift stores have a huge selection. I purchased a dozen small white plates (restaurant grade) for just 50 cents each for cat dinners.

9. Cat furniture

a9

If you’re handy with a few power tools like a jigsaw, you can create some great cat furniture from thrift store purchases. Want to make a litterbox cabinet? Shop for an end table or  credenza. A cat condo? Check out the many entertainment centers filling the thrift stores these days.

Shopping at a thrift store means being open-minded about your purchases…you just might come in for some shelving and leave with fleece blankets…but, by checking with the store every few days to see the new arrivals, you will find what you need at a fraction of retail price!
