Adopting a Cat? 7 Things to Pack for Your Shelter Visit

Are you considering a visit to your local shelter for a possible cat adoption? Congratulations…you very well might find your new best friend at the shelter. We definitely have, many times over. Except for Coco, Kit Kat and Elaine who came to us as strays, each of our cats has been adopted at an animal shelter. But before you head out to your local animal shelter, take a few minutes to consider just what you need to pack for a shelter visit.

what to pack for a shelter visit

After you complete your paperwork, some shelters will require a few days to check your information while others will allow you to take home your adopted cat that day. If the shelter you’re considering allows same day adoptions, you’ll also want to bring these items with you to the shelter:

Pack Contact Information.

You’ll need to complete paperwork for a cat adoption including information such as your address and possibly some references. You’ll need to supply information on whether you rent or own, how many other pets you have and their ages, etc. If you rent, you may need to get a form signed by your landlord stating that it is OK for you to have a pet.

Pack Your Vet’s Contact Information.

If you have other pets (or have previously), you’ll want to provide your veterinarian as a reference. Carry your vet’s contact information with you. Many shelters will verify that all of your pets are current on vaccinations, also.

Bring All Members of Your Household.

Some shelters will want everyone in your household to be present for the adoption. (This prevents future problems so it’s a good idea…and everyone’s going to share in the care of your new cat so everyone should be present for the big day!)

Bring a Cat Carrier.

You’ll need to secure your cat for the drive home. A cat carrier is a must-have for cat families.

Also, you will have future vet visits and a cat carrier is the safest way to transport your cat and sit in the waiting room.

Pack a Towel or T-Shirt.

You want your cat’s first time in your car to be a great one.

Welcome him with some soft bedding to lie on for his ride to his new home. Line the cat carrier with something as simple as an old t-shirt or towel–and one that has been used is even better. Your cat can begin to get to know you through the scent of your worn t-shirt or sweater.

Bring the Correct Payment Method.

Some shelters accept credit cards; some don’t. Check with yours in advance of your visit to see if you need to bring a checkbook or cash .

Bring Your Phone or a Camera.

Don’t forget to take a photo of your new family member on adoption day!

Pin it to remember what to pack for a shelter visit!
