What’s New : okocat Natural Cat Litter

okocat cat litter

We’re always interested in learning about new eco-friendly products, so we were excited to learn about the new ökocat natural cat litters from Healthy Pet. These litters, which launched in the state of California but are now available through major online pet retailers, are made from natural wood.

The properties of each of the four types of litter are varied (you’ll see the specifics on each below) but all are designed to be absorbent and prevent odor.

We gave the ökocat Natural Wood litter a try with Lucky, who’s happy to use all litters, even though the texture might be different than that to which he’s accustomed. (Our other cats are pretty picky about any change in litter and especially in texture.)

The texture of ökocat Natural Wood and Natural Wood Pine is different than what your cat is probably accustomed to if he’s using a traditional litter. Here’s a look at the Natural Wood Pine:

The pellets on the Natural Wood Pine and especially the Natural Wood are large (presenting a problem with most litter sifters).

Those large pellets could be very useful for a cat with a paw injury, however. When we adopted Lucky, the shelter was busy tearing up newspaper to create litter for a cat who had come in with an injured paw. She was unable to use commercial clay litter because of the risk of embedding a small piece of litter in her wounds. For situations like that, the large pellets of Natural Wood could be a good option.

We keep a separate litterbox in one bathroom for Lucky, although all the cats are welcome to use it and he can use their boxes in the other room. Lucky enjoys using the litterbox whenever one of us goes in the room (look what I did!) so we keep that box for his use.

Lucky checked out the ökocat and took to it right away. It was very absorbent and looked much like sawdust when wet; it did clump. Fecal matter was a little more challenging with the litter; it seemed that Lucky didn’t cover it up as well and, when he did, the litter didn’t provide much cover. (Don’t worry: we won’t show you photos!)

Like all litters, use of ökocat or any other litter is a highly personal choice; it’s a matter of seeing what works for your cat! It’s available in four formulas, each in three sizes:
