A loss for the Buffalo Bills turned out to be a win for cats in need thanks to fans of a feline-loving football player.
After missing a game-tying field goal in the final moments of a playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the claws were out for Tyler Bass, who became the target of online bullying. However, true members of the Bills mafia gave a cheer for the placekicker by sending in donations to one of his favorite charities.
Bass is a supporter of the no-kill cat adoption group Ten Lives Club. (The sports star chose to pose for photographer Leo Howard Lubow alongside an adoptable kitten from the non-profit for the nationwide Show your Soft Side campaign against animal cruelty.)
To show their support for Bass, fans have been sending in $22 donations (a nod to Bass’ number 2 jersey) and in the span of two days have raised more than $180,000 for the non-profit!
It all started with a rallying cry posted on Ten Lives Club’s Facebook page:
WE STAND WITH TYLER BASS. DON’T BULLY OUR FRIEND We just heard the terrible news that Tyler Bass is receiving threats after yesterday’s game and our phones are ringing off the hook from people who want to donate $22 to Ten Lives Club in Tyler’s name.
Tyler doesn’t deserve any of the hate he’s receiving. He’s an excellent football player and an even better person who took the time to help our organization and rescue cats last year. Leave our friend alone.
