As we start to wind down 2023, we wanted to take a look at some of the projects that cat-loving celebrities have promoted this year to assist shelter cats. Jonathan Van Ness, the two-time New York Times best-selling author and star of Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning reboot series Queer Eye, helped promote a program that paid for the adoptions of 300 shelter cats.
This past July, Fresh Step® and Van Ness partnered by covering kitten and cat adoption fees at Best Friends locations nationwide.
“I’m a proud parent to five gorgeous adopted cats,” said Jonathan Van Ness. “The bonds and companionship I share with my cats—Matilda, Larry, Genevieve, Liza, and Baggy—are incredibly beneficial to my mental, emotional, and physical well-being.”
“I’m so thrilled to join Fresh Step for this program to help underscore the special connection between cats and their people and help more pretty kitties find loving homes.”
Van Ness’ work with Fresh Step and Best Friends is one of many campaigns the comedian and author has participate in to help draw attention to both pets and animal shelters.
In 2020, Purina teamed up with the pet parent and self-care guru to discuss making meaning holiday moments with pets.
“I love my adopted pet family, so I’m thrilled to partner with Purina to talk about how pet owners can create meaningful moments for their pets this holiday season,” said Van Ness. “My pets have given me so much joy, especially this year, so I’m excited to share tips and treat suggestions with other pet owners that will show our pets love, comfort and gratitude.”
And in 2022, Van Ness really joined the pet world with the launch of a pet lifestyle brand. Along with Queer Eye co-star (and cookbook author) Antoni Porowski and others, Van Ness is a co-owner of Yummers, featuring meal mix-ins and supplements for cats as well as dogs.
“Some of the most rewarding relationships in my life have been with my pets and they have enriched my life beyond words,” said Van Ness. “We have bonded over our love for animals, and we want Yummers to help people give all the joy and love back to their pets that they give to us.”
