Hug Your Cat Day

As friends of felines we have collectively embraced the idea of pet holidays in recent years, and today our calendars are filled with dates which range from observances of such solemn subjects as the promotion of pet adoption and spay/neuter awareness to celebrations of the offbeat. Other pet holidays are just plain sweet…like Hug Your Cat Day.

When is Hug Your Cat Day?

Hug Your Cat Day (sometimes referred to as National Hug Your Cat Day) is celebrated every year on June 4.

How to Celebrate Hug Your Cat Day

On June 4th we will show our dogged devotion for this pet holiday by squeezing in a little extra time during our busy schedules to throw our mittens around our kittens and show them how much we care.

An opportunity to fortify our friendship with our feline fur baby, the holiday is as beneficial to our kitty companions– who feel a sense of security and comfort enfolded in the arms of a forever family member– as it is to us, as stress levels lower while our spirits begin to rise.

Do Cats Like to Be Hugged?

The question of whether cats like to be hugged varies from individual to individual, much like humans. Here are some factors to consider:

Individual Personality: Some cats may enjoy close physical contact and feel comforted by hugs, while others might find it restrictive and stress-inducing.

Trust and Bonding: A cat that has a strong bond with its owner and trusts them might be more accepting of a hug than a cat that’s more wary or hasn’t established that level of trust.

Past Experiences: Cats that have had negative experiences with being restrained, whether in a traumatic situation or even at the vet, might be more resistant to hugging.

Body Language: Cats communicate a lot through their body language. If a cat stiffens up, tries to wriggle away, lays its ears flat, or swishes its tail vigorously, it’s likely not enjoying the hug. On the other hand, a relaxed cat that purrs, closes its eyes, or leans into you might be more receptive.

Approach: How you approach the cat matters. Slow, calm, and gentle movements are more likely to be received well compared to sudden or forceful actions.

Alternatives to Hugging: If your cat doesn’t like to be hugged, there are other ways to show affection that they might prefer, such as gentle petting, chin scratches, or simply sitting next to them.

If you’re unsure about your cat’s feelings towards hugs, it’s essential to pay close attention to their reactions and body language. Always ensure that your cat has an easy escape route and never force them into a hug. Over time, by observing and respecting their boundaries, you can determine the best ways to show affection that are enjoyable for both of you.

Cat Hugging at Our House!

Our cats say EVERY day is hug your cat day in our house! This was the very first photo we took of our little Inca, then six months old, when we got her home from the shelter. We’re lucky in that each of our cats enjoys a good hug!
