Garfield Promotes Shelter Adoption

Garfield
For decades the comedic capers of Garfield and Odie have tickled the funny bones of comic strip readers, and now fans of the lasagna-loving cat and his doggedly devoted canine friend are tickled pick that the pals with paws are helping to draw attention to companion animals who need forever homes.

Garfield2Marking Adopt-A-Cat Month, the iconic tabby– who can currently be seen in 2,100 newspapers– promotes the option of pet adoption in a public service ad for The ShelterPetProject.org, a joint effort between Maddie’s Fund, The Ad Council and The Humane Society of the United States launched in 2009 to help the 2.4 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who find themselves in the shelter system each year.

“Who better to champion the need to visit a shelter than Garfield?” Jim Davis, the creator of the curmudgeonly kitty and CEO of Paws, Inc., stated. “Everyone here at Paws, Inc. is so honored to be a part of this initiative. I hope that Garfield can encourage a whole new generation to visit their local animal shelter or rescue group. Who knows, there might be a Garfield or an Odie waiting for them.”

Garfield and Odie are not the only characters to get animated about the paws cause. Earlier this year Disney Princesses Cinderella, Tiana, Belle, Ariel and their Palace Pets Pumpkin, Lily, Teacup and Treasure starred in a PSA in the hope of creating a happily ever after for shelter animals. Real life famous friends of our four-pawed pals have also stepped in front of a camera for The Shelter Pet Project, including actress Bellamy Young from the ABC hit Scandal, Torrey DeVitto from The CW series The Vampire Diaries and Paul Shaffer from The Late Show with David Letterman.
