The term “gremlin” conjures images of small, impish creatures, known for their mischief and chaos – characteristics that might be all too familiar to cat lovers! Naming your cat after a gremlin can be a nod to your kitty’s playful, and sometimes chaotic, nature, adding a sprinkle of magic and folklore to your daily interactions. Whether inspired by the famous movies or the broader mythos surrounding these cheeky creatures, a gremlin cat name can imbue your fur baby with a charmingly mythical persona that celebrates their most playful and enigmatic qualities.
Just What is a Gremlin?!
A “gremlin” is a mythical creature that originally was known as a saboteur of aircraft during World War II. The concept of gremlins as mechanical saboteurs was popularized among the Royal Air Force, where it was sometimes postulated that these “creatures” were responsible for causing various technical issues and malfunctions in aircraft, basically being blamed for unexplained problems that would occur.
In the 1970s, the Gremlin was a popular two-door car (and my very first car, in bright yellow with a black stripe!)
Gremlins Movie Characters
The term and concept of a “gremlin” really became popular after the film series starting with Gremlins in 1984. In this and its sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, gremlins are small, mischievous creatures that transform from cute, innocent-looking creatures called Mogwais.
Mogwais can transform into gremlins, which are much more sinister, chaotic, and destructive, especially if they are fed after midnight or come into contact with water, which causes them to multiply uncontrollably.
- Gizmo – The main Mogwai character, known for being cute and good-natured, unlike the other Gremlins that spawn from him.
- Stripe – The leader of the Gremlins in the first movie, characterized by a white mohawk-like stripe of hair on his head.
- Mogwai – The species name for the cute furry creatures before they turn into Gremlins.
- Mohawk – One of the primary antagonists in the second film, resembling Stripe from the first movie.
- Brain Gremlin – A Gremlin who gains intelligence and the ability to speak eloquently in the second movie, after drinking a brain hormone.
- Daffy – A crazy and erratic Gremlin from the second movie, named after the similarly erratic Daffy Duck.
- Lenny – Another Gremlin from the second movie characterized by his goofy appearance and demeanor.
- George – A Gremlin from the second movie, who resembles a mobster and is often seen alongside Lenny.
