Fix by Five Month

Share with fellow cat lovers!

This month marks an important campaign in the world of feline welfare: Fix by Five Month. This initiative emphasizes the importance of spaying or neutering cats by five months of age, a crucial step in controlling the pet population and improving the health of cats.

What is Fix by Five?

Fix by Five Month is recognized every February. The veterinary-led initiative advocates for the spaying or neutering of cats before they reach five months of age. It was launched in 2016 by Marian’s Dream, a nonprofit that supports programs to end pet overpopulation.

The American Veterinary Medical Association endorsed the five-month recommendation for spay/neuter the following year and, since that time, the recommendation has also been endorsed by the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, the American Animal Hospital Association, the Winn Feline Foundation, the CATalyst Council, the Cat Fanciers’ Association, and The International Cat Association.

Why is Early Spaying/Neutering Important?

The goal is to prevent unwanted litters, which contribute to the overpopulation of cats in shelters and on the streets. Early spaying and neutering also have health benefits for cats, including reducing the risk of certain cancers and behavioral issues.

  • Controls Overpopulation: Millions of cats end up in shelters or as strays due to unplanned litters. Fixing cats by five months helps curb this issue.
  • Health Benefits: Spaying and neutering reduce the risk of uterine infections, breast tumors, and testicular cancer. It also prevents females from going into heat, which can be stressful and loud.
  • Reduces Unwanted Behaviors: Neutered males are less likely to spray, roam, or fight, while spayed females avoid the stress of heat cycles.
  • Longer, Healthier Lives: On average, spayed and neutered cats live longer, healthier lives.

How Can You Help?

  • Spay/Neuter Your Cat: If you have a kitten, make sure to schedule a spay/neuter surgery before they turn five months old.
  • Spread the Word: Educate others about the importance of early spaying and neutering. Share information on social media, in community groups, or among friends and family.
  • Support Low-Cost Clinics: Donate to or volunteer at clinics offering low-cost spaying and neutering services, making it accessible for more cat owners.
  • Advocate for Change: Encourage local shelters and veterinarians to adopt and promote the Fix by Five guidelines.
  • Share Success Stories: If you’ve had a positive experience with early spaying/neutering, share your story to encourage others.

By participating in Fix by Five Month, we can collectively make a significant impact on the wellbeing of cats and the challenge of overpopulation. Let’s work together to spread awareness and encourage responsible pet ownership!
