Nine years ago today, John and I were sitting on our back deck having breakfast. We’d returned home late the night before from an assignment in Jamaica so that morning we were just relaxing and catching our breath before unpacking.
Suddenly we looked up and, walking down our road and across the creek, was our then-next door neighbor, Javier. He was carrying a small box. And in that box, we soon learned, was a tiny white kitten.
The night before, Javier had picked up his mail at the post office. As he was returning to his car, he saw something small moving in the bushes. Javier went to investigate–and found the kitten. Knowing that we loved cats, Javier brought the tiny kitten to us.
Monday morning, I took the kitten to our vet, who estimated that Coco was about four weeks old. Once Coco had a good report from the vet, we set about slowly introducing her to our other cats, then Linus, Felix and 10-month-old Inca, who immediately took on the role as her mother:
Coco quickly won over the boys in the house, too:
These days, Coco and Inca still have a special relationship, and Coco is never far from the youngest member of our home, Lucky.
Today we’ll have a special celebration for Coco’s ninth “gotcha day” to mark the day when tiny Coco joined our family!
