As our days swirl by in a blur of work, the upcoming holiday season really makes us stop and remember those things that matter to us: the members of our family. Our pets, as we all know, are a vital part of that family. Our cats and dogs both make the holidays a joyous time in our home. With no children in our house, our furry family members give us an excuse to pamper and play, and to enjoy time away from our computers.
Our late, great Felix absolutely loved the holidays. As soon as the Christmas tree was up, Felix was beneath it. We have special cat ornaments that we hang on the lowest branches of the tree, including a black and white cat in a stocking that he liked to lie beneath. I’ve had that ornament since my very first cat, Cheeto, and it has been on the tree through many generations of cats who are now gone: Cheeto, Snickers, Shady, Elaine, KitKat, and, now Felix.
This will be our first Christmas in 15 years without Felix.
We are not the only ones who have missed Felix, though; he was also best buddies with our dogs:
This year, our celebrations will be different. We’ll all be missing Felix but, with an ending, so has come a new beginning. This will be Lucky’s first Christmas:
Last year at this time, Lucky was in the first of two shelters he’d reside in before we adopted him on Valentine’s Day. Although Lucky looks very much like Felix, he’s definitely his own little fellow. Right now, he’s in a climbing phase; with this little monkey in the house, we’re not sure what our plans will be for the Christmas tree. We might put one up with no ornaments…or it may wind up residing on the front porch, safely beyond Lucky’s reach.
Nonetheless, we know the holidays will be filled with play…and food…and family…
And that, after all, is what makes the holiday season so special.
