Well, sadly this week is ending minus 10 teeth…
On Wednesday night, I was petting Felix and noticed a small cut on his lip. I pulled back his lip and soon saw that his canine tooth was missing but the root was still showing. Needless to say, Felix was at the vet’s office by first thing the next morning.
Soon a phone call from our vet confirmed that Felix’s canine tooth was broken…but also that nine other teeth were really badly damaged below the gum line and needed to be pulled.
Poor Felix is now left with a total of only five teeth: one canine, one molar, and three tiny teeth in front. (Because Felix was a feral cat, he didn’t have good nutrition as a kitten, and he’s always been missing most of the top tiny front teeth.)
I went to the vet’s office to pick up Felix yesterday afternoon and they gave me a sack with his teeth. I have given them to the Tooth Fairy and she has brought Felix some super yummy soft treats, canned food, and baby food. As soon as we got Felix home, he was ready to snuggle on the bed with his best buddy, our dog Tiki.
A half hour later, Felix was ready to eat!
Someone asked me if Felix would have to eat canned food from now on; our vet said after the gums heal, he’ll be able to eat what he likes. We always have both canned and dry food (he eats prescription food) so he’ll have a choice.
Please be sure to keep an eye on your cat’s teeth; we had NO idea Felix was having tooth problems but he had to be in pain with that much damage. There was no telltale bad breath, no drooling, no problems eating.
Today Felix is doing great. He’s on antibiotics and pain killer (along with his hyperthyroidism pills) but he let me give him all his medication this morning without any problem! He’s a true sweetie and we’re so, so glad he’s back home and feeling great!
