A Felix Update

Today was Felix’s two-week checkup after his urinary tract blockage and hospitalization. He has been doing great taking his medicine and adjusting to his all-canned food diet.

Felix got a good report from the vet with one exception: he has hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Our vet thought it was a recent development because he isn’t displaying any of the symptoms you might expect to see with hyperthyroidism such as excessive hunger, lots of vocalization, irritability, and others.

(Strangely, when our vet described the symptoms, the first thing that popped into our minds was our cat Linus, who is also 11 years old. He has an appointment on Monday to have his thyroid levels checked.)

So now Felix will be on thyroid medication daily, with a recheck in three weeks. In the meantime, we’re also testing his urine to make sure there’s no sign of infection.

We got this unique test kit from the vet today:

It’s a small plastic cup filled with plastic pellets for the litter box! One night in the next week or so (not tonight since he’s had enough stress for today), we’ll get a brand new litter box, add the plastic pellets, and put Felix and the litter box in the bathroom for the night. The next morning, the same container the pellets came in will be used to take the urine to the vet’s office.

Felix did great at the vet’s office today but as soon as the exam was over he gave that “I’m outta here” look and headed for his cat carrier!
