Cattipper Review: We’ve written before about why our four felines are strictly indoor cats, especially about the large concentration of coyotes in our rural area and the dangers they pose to cats. And, let’s face it, one of the problems of keeping our kitties indoors is the necessity of maintaining several litter boxes in the house with their attendant problems: smells, unsightliness and scattered litter.

Regarding the last item, our two boy cats seem to take great pleasure in kicking litter as far from the box as possible, so changing the litter always involves a great deal of sweeping up. And, one of our dogs (to protect the guilty, we won’t say which one) likes to help us “clean up” the litter boxes whenever we leave the door open. Yuk!

We were recently asked to review a  product which promises to take care of all of those issues, the aMazing Litter Box Cover, made by Mouzers, a Texas company. The box ships flat and is then quickly assembled…

The Cover is a heavy cardboard box which is sized to accept standard sized (18.5″ X 15.25″ X 5″) litter pan. From the outside, it resembles a large banker’s box in which you might store your tax records (or vet bills). It fits together using pre-cut flaps…

Inside, the Cover is divided into two compartments, a larger one to hold the litter pan and a smaller compartment which provides a cat-sized entryway into the main compartment. A snug-fitting lid covers the box…

The design is simple, but effective; odors are contained and errant bits of litter stay in the box (unless your cat can bend it like Beckham) and the “maze” entry keeps inquisitive canines out. The Cover comes in three colors: white, natural, and black/white zebra stripes.

We received the zebra-striped model to try out and we wasted no time in putting one of our litter pans into the box.

We put it in the litter pan’s usual place in the laundry room and left it there overnight. Next morning, a quick check confirmed that the litter had been used by one or more of our cats and there was no stray litter on the floor. Changing the litter in the pan was quick and easy.

We know there are some felines who don’t like to conduct their business in an enclosure but there are probably more who will welcome the privacy that the aMazing Litter Box Cover provides them. The company says that some customers have reported using the aMazing Litter Box Cover for other feline purposes: a kitty play area, feeding area, and even a kitten nursery.

We think the aMazing Litter Box Cover is a good little product which will deliver what it promises. Our main concern is for staining from cats that “overshoot” the litter box walls and soil the box itself.  The company is developing a liquid-resistant liner to deal with this issue.

For apartments or for homes that need to hide a litter box (maybe from holiday company?), the Cover can provide a good option for cats that like to toilet in an enclosed box.

The Price: $24.95 plus shipping and handling from the manufacturer’s website
