Happy 1st Birthday, Jetty!

Since the real birthdays of our pets are never really known (each was previously a stray), we always celebrate their adoption dates as birthdays…and sometimes I forget about their “real” birthdays! Yesterday we received this e-card from Jetty’s vet celebrating her 1st birthday which probably occurs sometime in June!

It’s ironic that Jetty’s birthday coincides with the start of hurricane season. As you’ll recall, we adopted Jetty on September 1 from Austin Pets Alive after her rescue from Hurricane Harvey. Jetty came to Austin Pets Alive from Victoria, a town near the Texas coast flooded by Hurricane Harvey.

Two weeks ago, we were passing through Victoria and went by the animal control office that first rescued Jetty from the flood waters:

We think that Jetty had been plucked from the water; when we adopted her, she still had evidence of many fire ant bites on her body. We think she was in this transport from Austin Pets Alive (maybe the little black kitten in the back corner??)

Once she arrived in Austin, Jetty, along with thousands of animals being brought in from shelters flooded throughout the coastal area, was processed through a former mall converted into a shelter. The next day, she found herself in the adoption center…and, soon after, in our arms…

Jetty has become such an important member of our family. She’s helped to heal our broken hearts after the loss of 18-month-old Ochi to cancer on August 25, the day Harvey struck. She has become great buddies with Inca and most especially Lucky:

She loves our dogs and has helped welcome our puppy Barli with open paws:

We named her for the jetty in our favorite coastal town of Port Aransas. The jetty is a stone breakwater that protects the shore. When so much of the town was destroyed, the jetty stood strong, just like this little girl who faced one of the most catastrophic storms this state has ever seen. We love you, Jetty…happy birthday!
