This has been a tough, tough week for us with the loss of Coco. After crying until I could cry no more, we decided that it was time to bring another cat into our lives. Lucky really needs a playmate (while he and Inca get along, both Linus and Coco were his play buddies). We’d planned to adopt after Linus passed away at Easter…but Coco became sick a few weeks later.
And, honestly, we needed to smile again. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor Coco’s memory than to share our lives with another cat who needs a home.
Well, we went to Austin Pets Alive and adopted a four-month-old kitten! Named Gummy Bear at the shelter, she’s originally from nearby Lockhart. She was transferred to Austin Pets Alive in early June because of space limitations at Lockhart animal control.
Once she arrived at Austin Pets Alive, they found out that she had ringworm. Her stay was in the Ringworm Adoption Center, a wonderful program that treats cats and kittens that have been diagnosed with ringworm. When the cats are cleared of fungus, they graduate to the main adoption building but, in our kitten’s case, we adopted her straight from the Ringworm Center and will finish up her dips and treatment at home. We’ve had experience with ringworm in the past; our sweet Inca had a much more severe case of ringworm when we adopted her.
We’ve named her Ochi (the nickname of Ocho Rios, which was our primary destination when we were writing Caribbean guidebooks…and she’s our eighth black, white, or black and white cat!)
We are already in love with this 3.5-pound bundle of fun. She’s a purring machine and loves to play on her cat tree. She hasn’t met her fellow furry family members yet as we continue with her dips and medication so this will be an extra slow introduction–but Lucky especially is already sitting patiently at the door to the bathroom, waiting to meet his new little sister.
I hope she’ll follow in Coco’s paw prints and be a great buddy to our other cats and dogs for many, many years. We are just in love with this little sweetie…stay tuned for many baby photos!
Thank you, Austin Pets Alive and the great staff of the Ringworm Adoption Center for caring for this little girl!
