Are you looking for a cat litter that does more than just handle cat pee and poop–by providing information on your cat’s urinary health? We recently had a chance to review Pretty Litter, a cat litter of special interest to owners whose cats have experienced urinary tract infections and other health issues.
We received a complimentary sack of Pretty Litter for review. All statements and opinions are entirely our own.
What is Pretty Litter?
Pretty Litter is a cat litter that helps identify problems in your cat’s urine with litter that changes color. The super fine litter, which resembles white sand, is specially designed to monitor your cat’s health, to provide early detection for many problems and to be eco-friendly.
Why We Wanted to Try Pretty Litter
Our regular readers know that several years ago our cat Lucky had surgery to remove numerous bladder stones. Since his surgery, he’s had several urinary tract infections.
Lucky’s young and energetic so, until we’d seen blood in the urine, there’d been no indication through his behavior that anything was amiss. No licking, no straining, no obvious discomfort. No peeing outside the box.
That’s largely because Lucky, like most cats, is a master at hiding discomfort.
This survival instinct helps cats in the wild–but it makes it difficult for pet parents to detect problems and seek treatment before they turn into big problems. When we heard about Pretty Litter, an innovative cat litter that is designed to help you spot issues in your cat’s urine by changing color, we wanted to give it a try.
What Does Pretty Litter Detect In Your Cat’s Urine?
When your cat urinates in a box filled with PrettyLitter, the litter looks for problems that can range from diabetes to urinary tract infections using multiple indicators:
- pH
- bilirubin
- blood

When the cat litter detects a problem, it changes color:
If you see a color change, you then know it’s time for a vet visit!
What do the Pretty Litter colors mean?
OK, you’ve seen a change in the litter color and you’ve booked a vet appointment…but what does that color change indicate? According to the manufacturer:
Dark Green or Blue This means your cat’s urine is high in alkaline indicating possible:
- Increased risk of struvite stone formation in the bladder
- Certain species of bacteria of feline urinary tract infection (bacteria that causes the infection can increase urine pH)
Yellow to Orange This means that your cat’s urine is acidic indicating possible:
- Kidney disease or kidney tubular acidosis
- Metabolic acidosis
- UTI
- Calcium oxalate crystal formation
Red This shows the presence of blood indicating possible:
- Bladder inflammation
- Bladder stones
- UTI
- Bladder cancer
- Renal pathology (renal hematuria)
The clumping litter is delivered to your door each month. I was pleasantly surprised how inexpensive this litter is.
A big paws up for Pretty Litter for providing us with a tool for helping to keep our cats healthy!
Where can I buy Pretty Litter?
When we first tried Pretty Litter, it was available only through the Pretty Litter site and was sold as a subscription. Now, however, you can purchase just one bag of Pretty Litter at Walmart, Target and other stores.
