Cat Names Inspired by Oscar Nominees

A few years ago, Banfield Pet Hospital and its internal research team Banfield Applied Research and Knowledge (BARK) searched their database of clients for pets who have monikers that mirror those of movie stars. These stars may or may not have gotten their paws on a prized statuette on Oscar night but their names inspired some star-studded glamour pusses:

Benedict Cumberscratch— It’s been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this feline’s almost famous name shows that he’s a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of The Imitation Game.

Bradley Pooper — One charismatic canine has stardom in his sights thanks to a name inspired by Bradley Cooper, who received a Best Actor nod for his work in American Sniper.

Bark Ruffalo — Two tail-waggers will no doubt howl with happiness when their namesake Mark Ruffalo was introduced for his nomination for his role in Foxcatcher.

Clint Eastwood — Banfield found six dogs and two cats named after the A-lister’s appellation.

Meryl — Six cats and six dogs named after the three-time Academy Award winner had their paws crossed that Meryl Streep will receive Oscar number four for her role in Into the Woods.

Oprah — 35 dogs and 11 cats share the name of the talk show queen who starred in the Best Picture-nominated movie Selma.

Bill Murray — 13 comedic canines and two funny felines answer to the name of The Grand Budapest Hotel star (and there’s one copycat, Bill Furray.)

Neil Catrick Harris — The former host of Hollywood’s biggest night, Neil Patrick Harris’ name inspired this cat moniker!

Celebrity Cat Names

Garbo, Harlow, Brando…to film fans these names conjure up images of Hollywood’s heyday, but to me these movie star monikers bring back memories of cats who have played starring roles in my life over the years.

When Tinseltown rolled out the red carpet for the Academy Awards, Petplan pet insurance fetched from their database of over 400,000 insured cats and dogs the most popular pet names that act as homages to Oscar:

  1. Rooney Mara
  2. Sylvester Stallone
  3. Leonardo DiCaprio
  4. Brie Larson
  5. Dustin Hoffman
  6. Matt Damon
  7. Denzel Washington
  8. Bette Davis
  9. Christian Bale
  10. Jennifer Lawrence

Along with actual A-list appellations, Petplan also applauded their database’s most creative celebrity-themed name, which was given to a pawparazzi magnet named Cat Damon.
