As you know, we’re proud to be bloggers for Rachael Ray Nutrish, a company that gives all of its proceeds to support homeless animals. All four of our cats (as well as our dogs) are rescues (three from shelters and Coco was a stray) so this has special importance to us.
So when Nutrish asked me to write a post about a day in the life of one of our cats, I thought of our most recent adoption: little Lucky. He was four months old when we adopted him on Valentine’s Day from Austin Pets Alive! (actually we first fostered him for a month until he was healthy enough for neuter surgery then the adoption was finalized). Today he’s over 10 months old–but he’ll always be our kitten! Here’s a look at Lucky’s day on Tuesday:
6:30am Wake-up Call. Lucky nibbled on my ear to wake me up. I didn’t respond quickly enough, so he attacked my feet.
7:00am Breakfast. John feeds the cats while I take the dogs out for potty break. (Our dog Irie recently had ACL surgery so she has to go for potty breaks on a leash, even in our fenced yard.) Like our other cats, Lucky eats Nutrish wet food; right now, his favorite is Chicken Purrcata.
7:15am Catio Time. Lucky loves, loves our catio. As soon as John feeds the cats, he takes a cup of sunflower seed out to the bird feeder near the catio. (The birds are so accustomed to this feed time that John can rattle the cup with the sunflower seed and the cardinals come to the tree, waiting.) Lucky immediately heads to the catio to begin a morning of bird watching.
10am Chase the Leash Time. As I mentioned, Irie is on leash any time she comes out; if she’s moving too quickly in the house, she has to be on leash indoors, too. Sometimes I clip the leash to her to remind her to slow down…and as she drags around the leash, Lucky looks at it as an invitation to play.
10:20am Return to Catio.
11:15am Check out the new bathroom window. We’ve got a DIY project going on right now; John is re-siding the back of the house and switching out some of the windows. The first window to be replaced was the bathroom window. That was the very first room Lucky was in at our house as it became his “safe room” on arrival. Even today, Lucky is very, very interested in anything that goes on in “his room” so he had to check out the new window. Much to John’s relief, Lucky gave it a paws up.
12:45pm Lunchtime & playtime. When I took my lunch break, Lucky knew it was time for play so he brought his favorite toy: a blue sparkly wand. He loves bells and wands and this toy has both. Tiki soon decided that perhaps the wand was HER toy, though.
1pm Naptime. Now it was time to settle into the serious nap of the day. Lucky took up his position on the couch with Irie for a good afternoon nap. They’re great buddies.
3:15pm Intruder: Time to defend the home! Our telephone line has been out since last week; when the repair man came to work on the line, he stopped by to let us know he was on property. Both dogs ran to the door barking…and Lucky ran to the door to peek out the window and see how he could help.
3:30pm Intruder chased off; naptime resumes. This time, though, Lucky decided it was time to relocate to John’s chair and join Linus in a nap.
4pm Window perch time. Although I’ve been working from the couch in the days after surgery as Irie recuperates, I headed upstairs to the office for a couple of hours of work–and Lucky accompanied me. He played with some toys I keep in my office then headed to Inca’s favorite window perch which overlooks our front yard:
5:45pm Let’s climb the walls! Lucky decided it was time for a little cardio and climbed the louvered door in my office. Time to call it an afternoon and take Lucky back downstairs for another session of wand play.
6pm Dinnertime. Time for dinner for Lucky, Inca, Coco, and Linus!
8pm Grooming time. Lucky and Coco decided it was time for some mutual grooming. They have become such buddies over the summer.
9pm TV time! We added a shelf to the side of the TV cabinet to make it easy for the cats to get on top of it (and to discourage them from trying to get in the cabinet with the TV!) Lucky loves to get up there and sit and watch us. Surely we’re looking at the TV cabinet to watch Lucky, right?
11pm Bedtime! Lucky curled up in my lap before I headed to bed, where he slept at my feet (for a while). Sweet dreams, Lucky! Rest up for another day of fun 🙂
