Actor Christopher Walken who garnered an Academy Award for his portrayal of Cpl. Nick Chevotarevich in the iconic war drama The Deer Hunter, has won the admiration of cat lovers for taking on the role of animal advocate for Best Friends Animal Society’s ‘I Saved My Best Friend’ campaign.
The movie star, who will soon share the big screen not only with fellow Oscar winner Kevin Spacey but also a purring performer in the upcoming comedy Nine Lives, has always been a fane of felines. The luminary who laughs at the wit of Henri le Chat Noir videos and penned a forward to the book KISS Guide to Cat Care has co-starred in real life with several kitties, including the late Flapjack, Bowtie, and now a stray who came to stay named Girl. Pregnant when she wandered up on the star’s doorstep, Walken and his wife cared for her kittens and found forever homes for each one, and cast Girl as their own fur baby.
While Girl had the good fortune to find a pet parent in Christopher Walken, three-fourths of the cats who wind up in animal shelters (many of whom are community cats, like Girl) lose their lives. Every day more than 9,000 cats and dogs face their fate in shelters from coast to coast. To change this sobering statistic, Best Friends Animal Society has been shining a spotlight on ways that the public can help turn the tide through pet adoption, spaying/neutering, donating and volunteering.
Christopher Walken is the latest in a long line of high-profile pals to those with paws who have stepped in front of the camera for Best Friends Animal Society’s ‘I Saved My Best Friend’ campaign. Other celebrities who have shown a spotlight on Best Friends’ call to action include Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum, Carrie Ann Inaba, Denise Richards, Allison Janney and Danny Trejo.
Nine Lives, starring Christopher Walken, Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner, will be unleashed in theaters on August 5th:
