Every day across the country more than 10,000 adoptable cats, kittens, puppies and dogs lose their lives in the U.S. shelter system, but there is a decided dip in the depressing statistic each year on June 11th as shelters stay true to their pledge not to euthanize any animal for 24 hours…and in the words of a classic tune, “What a difference a day makes.”
Founded by Nathan Winograd, an animal advocate/director of the No Kill Advocacy Center who transformed Tompkins County, New York into the nation’s first no-kill community back on June 11, 2001, Just One Day saved 13,000 innocent souls in 2014 alone. Featuring an online pledge for organizations on its website, potential pet parents can find a participating shelter in their area among the ever-growing list of shelters and rescue groups being added to the annual celebration of life.
Regardless of whether we as friends of felines will welcome an adoptable cat or kitten into our heart and home on June 11th, there are steps we can all take to help make Just One Day a success, such as spreading the word about the life-saving event; showing support for the organizations taking part and requesting other organizations to join in the struggle to turn the tide for the estimated 1.4 million cats and 1.2 million dogs who will otherwise face their fate in U.S. shelters this year.
