If Pets Had Thumbs Day {Would Your Cat Text You?}

Share with fellow cat lovers!

Perhaps the kookiest cat holiday on the calendar, If Pets Had Thumbs Day is a day to ponder the possibilities for our cats and dogs would do if they possessed prehensile digits.

When is If Pets Had Thumbs Day?

If Pets Had Thumbs Day is celebrated every year on March 3. This pet holiday was established by Thomas and Ruth Roy of wellcat.com– the minds behind Answer Your Cat’s Question Day and Pet Owner’s Independence Day.

What would your cat do if she had thumbs?

If Pets Had Thumbs Day (also known as If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day) offers pet parents an imaginary peek into a world where Fluffy could send text messages and Rover could take over the TV remote control.

While the thought might make you feel like the proverbial cat in a room full of rockers, it would be nice if our furry friends could also add a thumbs up to their ways to say “I love you!”

What do you think your cat would do if they had opposable thumbs? Get your own fingers flying on your keyboard and let us know in the comments section below!

If you wish your cat could text you, don’t miss the books and calendars in the Texts from Mittens series by Angie Bailey:

Can Cats Have Thumbs?

Cats do not have thumbs in the same way humans do. Instead, some cats have what’s known as a “dewclaw.” A dewclaw is a small, vestigial digit that is located higher up on the leg, and it doesn’t touch the ground when the cat walks. This is similar to the function of a thumb but is not opposable like a human thumb.

However, there are cats with a condition called polydactyly, which means they have extra toes (like the famed Hemingway cats). Some of these polydactyl cats might appear to have something resembling a thumb due to the extra toe, and it may even look like they have “mittens.”

Even so, these extra toes aren’t functional thumbs, and they aren’t opposable like human thumbs. Instead, they’re just additional toes. Polydactylism is a genetic mutation, and while it’s generally harmless, it’s essential to ensure the extra toes don’t cause any issues or complications for the cat.
